PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield, Ore., installed Globus Medical's ExcelsiusGPS robotic navigation system to assist surgeons in spine operations, The Register-Guard reports.

Three things to know:

1. ExcelsiusGPS maps patients' spines and uses a robotic arm to assist surgeons in the placement of screws.

2. The device can be used to place screws and insert spacers to realign the spine in spinal fusion procedures.

3. ExcelsiusGPS aims to improve patient safety and precision with the potential for smaller incisions, less scarring, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.
