While orthopedic surgeons perform the same job in every state, the work environment, salary and demand for services are not uniform across the country. 

A report from Zippia has ranked the top 10 best states for orthopedic surgeons, considering factors including average salary, lowest 10 percent salary, highest 10 percent salary, availability of jobs, and location quotient, a Bureau of Labor Statistics measure of how concentrated an industry is in each state compared to the U.S. as a whole. 

Top 10 states for orthopedic surgeons: 

1. Maine: 

Average salary: $267,693

Top 10 percent: $303,000

Bottom 10 percent: $236,000

Location quotient: 3.47 

2. North Dakota

Average salary: $258,834

Top 10 percent: $302,000
