An Illinois appeals court is allowing a lawsuit over an allegedly botched hip replacement to resume, according to court documents.
Patient William Johnson brought the suit against Lucas Armstrong, MD, and surgical technician Sarah Harden, alleging they were negligent during the October 2016 procedure, leading to severe nerve damage. McLean County Orthopedics and Advocate Health and Hospitals Corporation were also named as defendants in the suit.
After Johnson's hip replacement procedure, he developed femoral nerve palsy, according to court documents, with subsequent testing showing nerve damage in his quadriceps. He filed the lawsuit in September 2018. After summary judgment was granted to Harden and Dr. Armstrong, Johnson appealed.
Johnson's expert witness, retired orthopedic surgeon and President and CEO of biomedical firm SINTX Technologies Sonny Bal, MD, PhD, testified that he believed Johnson's injuries were evidence of negligence, despite the plaintiffs arguing that they followed the standard of care.
