7 orthopedic surgery 'firsts' in 2021

From new knee implants to innovative navigation systems, here are notable orthopedic surgery debuts so far in 2021:

1. Stephen Murphy, MD, performed the first total hip replacement with Surgical Planning Associates' HipInsight augmented reality intraoperative guidance system.

2. Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center performed the first augmented reality shoulder replacement in Texas using Blueprint Mixed Reality technology. Greg Cvetanovich, MD, debuted the system in Ohio.

3. New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery completed the first knee replacement with a smart implant enabling remote monitoring. Peter Sculco, MD, and Fred Cushner, MD, performed the procedure using the Persona IQ implant.

4. David Frumberg, MD, performed the first U.S. implantation of Orthofix's Fitbone system in a pediatric patient.

5. Trevor Pickering, MD, of Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, performed the nation's first robotic hip replacement surgery with Zimmer Biomet's Rosa system.

6. Stefan Kreuzer, MD, orthopedic surgeon and founder of Inov8 Orthopedics in Houston, performed the first surgery with Think Surgical's second-generation TSolution One for knee replacements.
