How an orthopedic surgeon's expertise drove a luxury shoe brand

Orthopedic

An orthopedic surgeon from Minnesota teamed up with his hepatologist wife to create high-heeled shoes that are more comfortable.

Fernando Peña, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle conditions for more than 20 years, according to a Sept. 21 profile in Artful Living. That knowledge was useful when designing the 2- and 3.5 inch-tall heels for their brand, Julieta.

They came up with the idea for Julieta while planning for a trip and realizing the need for comfortable and high-quality shoes.

"The foot mechanics change drastically when you wear a high-heeled shoe, and if the pressure points are not addressed, the shoe will become very painful to wear within an hour or so," he told the publication. "To achieve a comfortable heel, we started from the inside out. Once we covered the inside of the shoe and the biomechanical part of the design, it was time to focus on the exterior of the shoe."

Dr. Peña and Dr. Thomspon both work at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.
