Dr. James Cook performs 2nd hip surgery in 4 days on tiger at Illinois zoo

Orthopedic

A tiger at Brookfield (Ill.) Zoo is recovering from its second hip surgery in four days, both performed by James Cook, MD, director of the University of Missouri Health Care's Mizzou BioJoint Center in Columbia, The Chicago Tribune reports.

For the first surgery, which took place Jan. 27, medical device company Arthrex created a custom hip implant using a CT scan of the tiger. But the implant dislodged after surgery.

Dr. Cook performed a revision surgery Jan. 30, which removed the arthritic head and neck of the femur to allow the leg muscles to form a functional joint in place of the deteriorated original, according to the report.
