Orthopedic group reopens without confirmation that employee died from COVID-19

Carolina Orthopedics Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy reopened after a weeklong closure prompted by a potential COVID-19 case in one of its employees, who has since died, JDNews.com reports.

The employee posted on social media March 27 that she had tested positive for COVID-19, leading Carolina Orthopedics to close two North Carolina offices where she had recently worked. The woman died March 30.

An official cause of death hasn't been announced, but one of the employee's children posted on Facebook that her mother didn't die from COVID-19-related complications.

Carolina Orthopedics hasn't received confirmation about whether the employee was COVID-19 positive. Its decision to close for cleaning was based solely on the employee's social media posts, practice manager Tracy Watkins told JDNews.com.

Carolina Orthopedics contacted patients who visited its New Bern and Jacksonville offices on March 20, the last day the employee worked at either location. The offices are now back in operation with safety protocols in place.

Carolina Orthopedics has locations in New Bern, Jacksonville and Kinston, all in North Carolina.
