Here are nine orthopedic surgeons making headlines this week.
Dennis Burke, MD, a former orthopedic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, will receive a $13 million settlement following his wrongful termination lawsuit. Dr. Burke alleges the hospital terminated him because he challenged its policy on concurrent surgeries.
Chicago-based Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush added Xavier Simcock, MD, and Divya Agrawal, MD, in October. Dr. Simcock specializes in wrist, elbow and shoulder arthroscopy and replacements as well as minimally invasive fracture care, tendon repair and reconstruction. Dr. Agrawal specializes in pain management with a subspecialty in nonsurgical interventional spine care.
Robert Madlinger, MD, recently completed his military service as the sole orthopedic trauma surgeon at the U.S. Army's Forward Operating Base in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Dr. Madlinger is chief of trauma and surgical critical care at St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson, N.J. He will return to work at the hospital later this month.
St. Peters, Mo.-based Advanced Bone and Joint recently added Keith Jarman, MD, to its surgical staff. Dr. Jarman is an orthopedic surgeon focusing on the treatment of injuries and conditions of the extremities, joint dislocations/instability, tendon procedures and arthritis procedures. He is seeing patients at Mercy Clinic Orthopedics – Lincoln in Troy, Mo.
Tampa-based Florida Orthopaedic Institute welcomed Kapil Mehrotra, MD, to its group on Nov. 5. Dr. Mehrotra is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction and joint replacement. He is seeing patients at the Telecom and South Tampa facilities in Florida.
Port Townsend, Wash.-based Jefferson Healthcare recently added Joseph Meyerson, MD, to its surgical staff. Dr. Meyerson is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon specializing in hand and wrist surgery. He completed a fellowship in hand and wrist surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Jared Roberts, MD, is leading an Operation Walk Albany team to Cuba to perform more than 50 free orthopedic surgeries. Four other orthopedic surgeons will make the trip to perform the procedures. The rest of the staff consists of support and physical therapy professionals. The team raised $150,000 to pay for supplies and travel expenses for the weeklong trip.
Ted Sousa, MD, is set to join Shriners Hospital for Children-Spokane (Wash.). Dr. Sousa earned his medical degree from Seattle-based University of Washington School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. He completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and another with an emphasis in cerebral palsy at Melbourne, Australia-based Royale Children's Hospital.
