Former NFL player Damien Richardson, MD, joined the medical staff of Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, Calif.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. Richardson will practice at HOI affiliate Newport Orthopedic Institute in Newport Beach, Calif. He is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle treatments.

2. Dr. Richardson played in the NFL for seven years as a strong safety for the Carolina Panthers before sustaining career-ending neck and knee injuries.

3. Dr. Richardson earned his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco and a master's degree at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. He completed his residency at the Tucson-based University of Arizona College of Medicine and underwent fellowship training at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital.

"Even before being drafted into the NFL, I had planned to become a physician," Dr. Richardson said in a press release. "Orthopedic surgery felt like a perfect fit considering my experience on the field. Joining this group of highly respected physicians at Hoag Orthopedic Institute feels like being a part of a Pro Bowl team of orthopedic surgeons."
