An orthopedic surgeon that surrendered his privileges at a Michigan-based hospital last year when the hospital came under scrutiny as a result of his actions, could have the ability to practice medicine again, according to the Lansing State Journal.

Four things to know:

1. After a nurse anesthetist complained about the orthopedic surgeon, CMS and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs investigated Sparrow Carson Hospital in Carson City. CMS then stated high infection rates at the hospital put its partnership at risk.

2. The investigation by the Michigan state agency reported, among other issues, that the orthopedic surgeon didn't diagnose and treat infections properly or maintain patient charts correctly. It also noted a high infection rate for the surgeon.

3. At the time, the orthopedic surgeon did not contest the charges. He was fined $1,500 and must complete certain requirements before he can practice medicine again. The surgeon will have a limited license and be under supervision while practicing medicine.

4. The state would also require him to take several steps to reinstate his license. He did not tell the Lansing State Journal whether he would seek to have his full license reinstated.
