Dr. Avi Kumar's research featured in Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty

Orthopedic

The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty published research from Avi Kumar, MD, of Bradenton, Fla.-based Coastal Orthopedics on reverse shoulder arthroplasty using a lateralized glenoid sphere.

The study examined 245 patients — ranging in age from 60 to 92 years old — who underwent reverse shoulder arthroplasty for cuff tear arthroplasty.

Patients with rotator cuff tears with instability and without shoulder arthritis or failed prosthetic shoulder arthroplasty were also studied.

Dr. Kumar performed the procedure with the lateralized glenoid sphere, which tenses the residual rotator cuff and seeks to optimize the function of the deltoid muscle.

Physicians noted improvements in range of motion and outcomes, irrespective of diagnosis and improvements in external rotation.
