A number of orthopedic surgeons have branched into other fields. Here are seven to know:

Nashville, Tenn., orthopedic trauma surgeon Manny Sethi, MD, entered the 2020 race for Tennessee's open U.S. Senate seat.

Jeffrey Dugas, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of Dread River Distilling in Birmingham, Ala., previewed the new manufacturing facility to the public on Memorial Day.

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Alan Gross, MD, emerged as a potential challenger against U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska. Dr. Gross considered running as an independent.

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon Allen Bishop, MD, played the oboe in the World Doctors Orchestra's concert in Israel in February. Dr. Bishop has been a member of the World Doctor's Orchestra for 10 years.

Joshua Carothers, MD, is tapping into New Mexico's growing film industry as medical director for VIP StarNetwork, a healthcare service for film sets in the state. The service is intended for stars who do not want to attract public attention by going to emergency rooms for care.

Retired orthopedic surgeon Arthur Heller, MD, became a registered piano technician. Dr. Heller became one of fewer than 2,000 people worldwide to complete three examinations covering all aspects of piano technology.

Raleigh, N.C.-based EmergeOrtho orthopedic surgeon Michael Marushack, MD, qualified to run in the Boston Marathon. He ran the Wrightsville Beach (N.C.) Marathon in 2017, which qualified him for the Boston Marathon.

John Williams Jr., MD, performs in a Bob Marley tribute band, John Truth and Reflexx. Dr. Williams is an orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedics Institute in The Villages, Fla., where he serves as director of its total joint program. He is also chairman of surgery at Central Florida Health in Leesburg.
