3 updates on AAOS proceedings in June

Orthopedic

The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons has been making headlines in June.

Three key updates to know:

Over 300 orthopedic surgeons met with congressional representatives as part of the AAOS National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference. Attendees are pushing policymakers to support legislation that would increase patient choice and access to care, transparency and competition in the health insurance market.

Orthopedic trauma surgeon Manny Sethi, MD, was endorsed by the Political Action Committee of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons for the U.S. Senate. Dr. Sethi officially will run for the open Tennessee seat, seeking to replace the Affordable Care Act, combat the opioid epidemic and tackle the immigration crisis along the southern border.

Kristy Weber, MD, president of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, provided an opposition statement to the surprise medical bill proposal of the Lower Health Care Costs Act of 2019. She warned that the legislation would lead to smaller insurance, fewer physicians in rural regions, less competition in healthcare and decreased access to care.
