An Operation Walk Carolinas medical team completed 60 total hip and knee replacements in three and a half days on a recent mission in Panama.
Three things to know:
1. The OWC medical team consisted of 50 providers from Charlotte, N.C.-based OrthoCarolina, Atrium Health and Novant Health.
2. The group also hosted professional education training about orthopedic care for Panamanian physicians.
3. OWC is a private, nonprofit volunteer medical services organization that provides free surgical treatment in developing countries.
"Patients who couldn't walk before surgery are now mobile and able to work, spend time with their families, provide for those families, and do the things they love," said Bryan Springer, MD, Operation Walk Carolinas co-founder and hip and knee surgeon with OrthoCarolina.
