Dr. Derek Jenkins 1st in New England to use Emphasys for total hip replacement

Orthopedic

Derek Jenkins, MD, an adult reconstruction surgeon at East Providence, R.I.-based University Orthopedics, has become the first surgeon in New England to use Depuy Synthes' Emphasys system for a total hip replacement surgery.

Emphasys builds on Depuy's Corail system, which Dr. Jenkins has used in more than 2,000 hip replacements over the span of 10 years, according to a March 29 press release sent to Becker's

Some of the new benefits of Emphasys include a wider variety of stem sizes to accommodate different sized femurs, better fit and surgical preparation for different sized femurs, better bone preservation, a streamlined workflow and better recreation of the femoral head center.

"We can't be complacent in medicine and orthopedics and just accept the status quo. If we keep doing the same things we've been doing for years, we will never get better. We will never move forward. I believe it's our job as academic orthopedic surgeons to move the art and science of joint replacement that next step further," Dr. Jenkins said in the release.
