Joint replacement volume to double per surgeon by 2050: study

Orthopedic

Orthopedic surgeons may need to double their total joint replacement caselod by 2050 to accomodate rising demand, according to research shared at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The findings comes from a population-based study using data from the National Inpatient Sample and Association of American Medical Colleges to measure the number of total joint replacements and active orthopedic surgeons, according to a march 7 news release from the AAOS. Those figures were measured from 2010 to 2020, and ggrowth trends were calculated.

Researchers found the annual volume of total joint replacements will grow 70 percent, while the number of active orthopedic surgeons is projected to dip 14 percent by 2050.

To make up for the projected gap, surgeons would have to add to their caseloads or the number of orthopedic surgeons would have to increase 10 percent every five years.
