AOFAS resumes volunteer surgery in Kenya

Orthopedic

American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society has returned to performing volunteer surgeries in Kenya following a three-year hiatus.

The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation Overseas Outreach Project's most recent mission included volunteers James DeOrio, MD, from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.; Jacob Zide, MD, from Orthopedic Associates of Dallas; and Kenyan surgeons at the CURE International Kijabe Mission Hospital. The group performed 40 foot and ankle surgeries over the course of five days, according to a Dec. 13 press release from AOFAS.

The program began in 2002. Volunteers have conducted 1,500 surgeries and 3,500 patient evaluations over the past 20 years. Trips abroad were temporarily put on hold due to pandemic travel restrictions.
