American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons accounces 2023 grant recipients

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has announced the inaugural recipients of its IDEA Grant Program. 

The recipients will receive a minimum of $1 million over the next five years to research disparities in orthopedics and promote diversity, equity, access and inclusion, according to a Nov. 1 press release sent to Becker's. 

Funding from medtech company Stryker helped to fund these grant awards. The academy gave out four different grants to multiple recipients. 

2023 IDEA grant awards and recipients: 

1. Touchpoints award: Supporting single-event programs that promote diversity and inclusion initiatives in orthopedic surgery for learners and practicing surgeons 

-American Association of Latino Orthopedic Surgeons 

-Howard University Hospital Ortho Alum (Washington D.C.)

-Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society: ASAMI-North America

-Nth Dimension

-Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons — E. Anthony Rankin Scholarship Program

-University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care

2. Retention award: Supporting organizations that have success recruiting and retaining diverse talent in orthopedic surgery 

-Community Memorial Health System

-Geisinger Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program (Danville, Pa.)

-Nth Dimensions

-Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society

-The Perry Initiative

3. Community retention/support award: Supporting organizations that have special programs for promoting diverse talent retention in orthopedic surgery in a private, remote setting 

-J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society

4. Academic retention/support award: Supporting organizations that retain and support diverse workforces in orthopedic surgery in U.S. academic centers
