9 things to know about Rothman Orthopaedic Institute

Founded in 1970, by Richard Rothman, MD, PhD, Rothman Orthopaedic Institute has grown from a single office in Philadelphia to almost 40 office locations across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York and is renowned for its treatment of musculoskeletal issues.

Here are nine things to know about Rothman Orthopaedic Institute:

1. Each physician at Rothman Orthopaedics is fellowship-trained, specializing in one area of orthopedics. The group has more than 200 physicians, 58 surgical centers and 38 office locations, according to its website.

2. In 2014, Alexander Vaccaro, MD, PhD, became president of Rothman Orthopaedics. Dr. Vaccaro has been with Rothman for more than 24 years. He has more than 730 peer-reviewed publications and serves as co-director of spine surgery and the spine fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

3. Rothman Orthopaedics actively engages in research and innovation in orthopedics. The practice's research institute features 60 full-time research staff members and develops annual literature on management strategies and practice patterns for musculoskeletal pathologies.

4. Each year, Rothman Orthopaedics' spine team performs over 6,000 surgeries. For more than a decade, the practice has collected data on all inpatient spine service consults, including patients with acute spinal cord injury, fractures and other traumatic injuries to the spinal column, tumors and infection. This data enables the development of new surgical techniques, devices and management strategies.

5. The group's sports medicine team evaluates almost 80,000 sports injuries and performs more than 11,000 surgeries per year. More than 17,000 hip and knee replacements are performed by Rothman Orthopaedics' physicians annually.

6. Rothman Orthopaedics is the official team physician for the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles and 76ers. The group recently expanded its sports medicine partnerships with several organizations, including esports network Nerd Street Gamers and the Philadelphia Fusion, the Radio City Rockettes and the Toughman NY 2020 triathlon.

7. In January 2019, the practice launched hip and knee joint replacement services at its New York City locations, with Eric Grossman, MD, spearheading the program. Daniel Smith, MD, is the head of joint replacement services at the group's Westchester County, N.Y., locations.

8. Last April, Four Rothman Orthopaedics physicians — Alan Hilibrand, MD, Frank Alberta, MD, Asif M. Ilyas, MD, and Marc J. Levine, MD — accepted leadership roles with medical societies. Dr. Hilibrand was appointed treasurer of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Alberta was appointed president of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society, Dr. Ilyas became president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and Dr. Levine became president of the Medical Society of New Jersey.

9. Last year, San Francisco-based Carrum Health partnered with Rothman Orthopaedics as its newest center of excellence. The partnership aims to facilitate self-insured employers in the tri-state area to provide quality and affordable healthcare benefits to employees and their dependents. Additionaly, the practice partnered with NueHealth and MUVE Health to integrate their respective models and platforms.
