Arkansas hospital adds 1st neurosurgeon in years, 2nd to follow

Practice Management

Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas, in Rogers, added neurosurgeon Alex Castellvi, MD, to its staff and plans to add another neurosurgeon this July, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports.

What you should know:

1. The hospital also added Paula Stephens, an advanced practice nurse practitioner who specializes in neurosurgery.

2. Healthcare specialists are in demand throughout Arkansas. A nonprofit business council estimated that the state lost $950 million annually in healthcare opportunities because of a lack of specialists.

3. Mercy previously had to transfer patients when they sought neurological care; however, most neurosurgical patients sought care outside of the region.

4. The recent addition of Dr. Castellvi and Ms. Stephens, as well as and the planned addition of another neurosurgeon, will allow Mercy to care for these patients.

5. Other hospitals in Arkansas are hiring. Springdale-based Northwest Health and Fayetteville-based Washington Regional Medical Center are also looking to boost their neurosurgery programs.
