Practice Management

Here are five key orthopedic and spine developments at Chicago-based Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush this year.

MOR opened its newest 100,000-square-foot Rush Oak Brook (Ill.) Orthopaedic Center earlier this year. The three-story medical building accommodates 17 specialties with outpatient surgery suites, more than 65 exam rooms and a full imaging center. The facility comprises of around 100 employees and specialists.

Kern Singh, MD, and his surgical team performed the first four minimally invasive outpatient spine surgeries at the new surgical facility in early November. Dr. Singh performed minimally invasive lumbar decompressions on the four patients, who were all discharged within two hours of surgery. The center is operated jointly by Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center and MOR.

Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush welcomed Jorge Chahla, MD, PhD, to its orthopedic and sports medicine team in August. Dr. Chahla is assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at RUMMC, director of biomechanical sports medicine research and director of the international fellowship program at Rush. He specializes in sports medicine and focuses on the treatment of complex knee, hip and sports-related injuries.

Richard A. Berger, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at MOR, became the first physician in the country to perform 10,000 outpatient minimally invasive joint replacement surgeries in May. Dr. Berger completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at RUMC and has developed specialized instruments and surgery techniques, as well as knee and hip implants.

MOR installed the Mazor X Robotic Guidance platform into its spine practice in March. Mazor X incorporates preoperative imaging and intraoperative guidance. The technology is designed for more precise screw placement and efficient procedures. The device allows surgeons to create customized surgical plans and during surgery the robotic arm guides the surgeon based on the preoperative plan.
