New Jersey practice launches orthopedic urgent care services at 2 offices — 3 key notes

Practice Management

Active Orthopedics and Sports Medicine opened an orthopedic urgent care clinic called OrthoASAP at its Hackensack, N.J., and Emerson, N.J., offices.

Three key notes:

1. Active Orthopedics, which also has offices in Montclair, N.J., and Elmwood Park, N.J, offers walk-in care for all types of orthopedic injuries through OrthoASAP.

2. OrthoASAP offices, where patients are seen by an orthopedic specialist from the Active Orthopedics team, offer custom bracing, custom crutches and onsite X-ray services.

3. OrthoASAP was launched as a faster, lower-cost alternative to emergency rooms or general urgent care centers, according to Michael Gross, MD, founder and managing partner of Active Orthopedics.

"Emergency rooms are great for trauma and major injuries, and general urgent care centers are great for colds and minor cuts," Dr. Gross said. "However, when patients use those services for orthopedic injuries, they are usually given a brace and told to see an orthopedic surgeon for follow up. This leads to increased testing, additional appointments and higher costs for the patient."
