Meet the next president of AAOS: Dr. David Halsey — 5 things to know

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons named David Halsey, MD, president of the board of directors.

 

"The healthcare landscape is evolving every day and a variety of opportunities and challenges are ahead of us," he said. "Together with the board, I will work alongside AAOS staff leadership to continue the critical and careful look at education, partnerships, quality and advocacy communications to ensure our 38,000 members are set up to succeed in various practice settings, and can continue to provide the best possible care to patients."

 

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Halsey is the chief of orthopedic surgery at Oak Bluffs, Mass.-based Martha's Vineyard Hospital and professor in the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington. He previously spent 18 years in private practice serving the upper valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire.

 

2. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Halsey has served on 15 AAOS councils and committees, including the board of directors. He also served as a board member of the Association Orthopaedic Political Action Committee.

 

3. In addition to his AAOS leadership experience, Dr. Halsey served as an officer for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and an executive committee member of the Vermont Orthopaedic Society.

 

4. CMS also finds value in Dr. Halsey's expertise; he has served as an adviser to CMS as both a specialty society member of the American Medical Association's Relative Update Value committee and the Commission on Ambulatory Payment Classification.

 

5. Dr. Halsey earned his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Vermont.
