Implant manufacturer Paragon Medical has broken ground on a 3D-printing facility in Pierceton, Ind., that will cost up to $35 million, Inside Indiana Business reported Nov. 30.

The company is investing $16 million in the facility initially, with plans for a further $19 million investment over the next five years as 3D printing is expected to play a key role in the development of customized orthopedic implants in the future.

"We're always trying to stay ahead of the technology curve, and this is one of the areas in [orthopedics] that's really starting to gain some momentum," Dan Blum, Paragon's Pierceton campus vice president and general manager, told the publication. "As this technology continues to grow, we want to ensure we're at the forefront and able to drive innovation."

Paragon's clients include orthopedic devicemakers Stryker, Zimmer Biomet and DePuy Orthopaedics, which all operate facilities in Indiana.

The Pierceton facility is expected to open by the end of 2022.
