German medical technology company Brainlab on June 26 launched Snke OS, a subsidiary focused on developing software to improve surgical navigation.

Four things to know:

1.The company is fusing a statistical patient model with individual anatomy from diagnostic images to create a digital representation of the patient. The model connects to the movements of surgical instruments, which can improve intraoperative navigation.

2. Snke OS's open interfaces enable other companies to integrate their systems for robotics, imaging, navigation and artificial intelligence into one system to harness the possibilities of digitization.

3. The software has opportunities to expand to other specialties, including spine, craniomaxillofacial and oncology.

4. Snke OS has begun operations with 65 Brainlab employees and plans to recruit 100 additional staff.
