Aegis Spine, Inc. announces successful first case with AccelFix-XL expandable LLIF interbody

Spinal Tech

In a recent press release, Aegis Spine, Inc. announced its successful first implantation of the AccelFix-XL expandable titanium interbody cage for LLIF.

Building on the initial market success of its AccelFix-XT expandable cage for posterior approaches, Aegis now offers technological distinction within the lateral surgery space.

“The precise expansion capability of this cage makes it very easy for me to perform single position MIS lateral surgery," says Dr. Fernando Villamil of The Orthopedic Center at CORE Hospital, Jenks, Oklahoma. “Improved MIS techniques have historically played a role in improving patient outcomes. However, as the demand for this type of surgery rises, the cost of the technology continues to outpace the payers and makes it difficult for hospitals to sustain profits. What Aegis also gets right is its cost accountable approach to innovation.”

In addition to realizing key benefits of lateral MIS surgery, such as minimizing blood loss, OR time, and hospital stay, AccelFix-XL has the potential to reduce psoas muscle retraction time, enhance surgical workflow, and unencumber hospitals from unnecessarily complex logistics and inventory models.

“One expandable cage can replace four different static cages in a traditional implant set and further shorten surgery time by eliminating repetitive steps,” states Tony Ahn, CEO of Aegis Spine. “Also, by providing them sterile packaged, we decrease the number of trays required per surgery while reducing costs associated with shipping and on-site processing, as well as maximizing facility space utilization. I believe these collective features will ultimately contribute to improving hospital operational efficiency and the bottom line.”

Aegis Spine, Inc., a subsidiary of L&K Biomed, is a U.S. based medical device company focused on marketing products for the surgical treatment of spine disorders. In cooperation with experienced spine surgeons, its overall mission is to restore welfare to healthcare by meaningfully shortening the patient’s road to recovery, increasing productivity and safety for health care professionals, and creating economic value for facilities, payers, and providers.
