St. John's Medical Center adds $1.1M player to staff: 5 things to know

Jackson, Wyo.-based St. John's Medical Center installed Stryker's Mako Robotic Arm System, according to Jackson Hole News & Guide.

Here are five things to know:

1. St. John's purchased the robotic system for $1.1 million. The hospital's foundation raised $550,000 to purchase the system.

2. Hospital surgeons are currently undergoing training on how to use the Mako system. They plan on using the robotic system primarily for knee and hip replacements.

3. St. John's is focusing on knee and hip replacements in order to get the most bang for their buck. Currently, the hospital is reimbursed similarly for robotic and open surgery. The hope is by increasing the number of joint replacements with the system the hospital will be able to reduce costs and increase revenue.

4. The hospital estimates around 190 knee and hip replacements were performed in the fourth quarter of 2017.

5. In the last 10 years, more than 2,000 surgical robots have been sold in the U.S. The trend of using robotics continues to rise.
