Peninsula Regional Medical Center offers minimally invasive neurosurgery: 5 takeaways

MIS

Salisbury, Md.-based Peninsula Regional Medical Center installed a hybrid operating room to allow physicians to perform minimally invasive brain surgery, according to WMDT.

Here are five takeaways:

1. No other hospital in the area offers patients minimally invasive brain surgery. Previously, PRMC patients were transferred to Baltimore for brain surgery.

2. Sopiha Shakur, MD, performed one of the first surgeries using the hybrid OR. She treated a brain aneurysm through a minimally invasive technique, placing coils in the aneurysm with a micro-catheter.

3. Surgeons also benefit from the hybrid OR. They can watch live videos of surgeries to better anticipate complications later on in the surgery.

4. Radiology is in the same room as the surgery, making it a one-stop-shop for patients.

5. PRMC is a 289-bed hospital with 3,300 physicians, staff and volunteers treating 500,000 patients annually.
