Saint Anne's Hospital launches Globus ExcelsiusGPS for minimally invasive spine surgery: 3 insights

MIS

Fall River, Mass.-based Saint Anne's Hospital launched the Globus ExcelsiusGPS. Saint Anne's is the first Massachusetts hospital to launch the surgical robot, The Herald News reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. The Excelsius uses guided navigation to line up the robotic arm to where an implant will be placed in the spine. Prior to surgery, X-rays of the surgical area are uploaded to Excelsius, mapping the patient's anatomy.

2. Saint Anne's Hospital also uses the da Vinci Surgical System for general surgery and urological procedures and the Mako robot for knee and hip surgeries.

3. To meet a growing demand for surgical and other services — surgeries have increased by 37 percent in the last five years — Saint Anne's Hospital unveiled new surgical rooms on Feb. 9. The hospital has also added new patient rooms, a rapid assessment and behavioral health area in the ED, new operating rooms and surgical robots.
