UConn Health the 1st US hospital to use augmented reality surgical microscope

Farmington, Conn.-based UConn Health is the first hospital in the U.S. to use the Arveo Augmented Reality microscope, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant reports.

 Here’s what you need to know:

1. The Arveo Augmented Reality microscope assists surgeons by creating visual overlays during brain and spinal surgeries. The overlays include a real-time, high-magnified view, a black-and-white dimension-adding view and a colored-view that enhances blood flow.

2. The microscope can light up blood flowing through brain tissues. It also can automatically refocus to allow surgeons to see the distance between nerve tissues and blood vessels without having to manually readjust equipment.

3. Isaac Moss, MD, used the microscope in January to remove and fuse a patient’s deteriorated spinal disks by only using small incisions .

4. The Arveo Augmented Reality microscope is produced by German manufacturer Leica Microsystems. The manufacturer is working to get FDA approval to upgrade the microscope’s visuals.
