Dr. Robert Watkins performs spine surgery with Osseus Fusion Systems' lateral technology: 4 key notes

Biologics

Robert Watkins Jr., MD, performed his first surgery with the Osseus Fusion Systems Aries-L technology, which is currently in alpha launch.

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Watkins performed his first surgery with the titanium 3D-printed lateral interbody device Jan. 24. He was a member of the team that assisted Osseus with the conceptualization and development of the Aries family of devices as well as the Black Diamond Open Pedicle Screw System.

2. In addition to developing new technologies, Ossseus has a philanthropic mission of providing surgical care to underdeveloped areas. "We look forward to an ongoing relationship with Osseus in developing superior surgical technology, as well as distributing resources to people in need," said Dr. Watkins.

3. Dr. Watkins is a member of the spine team at The Marina Spine Center at Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey (Calif.) Hospital, working alongside his father, Robert Watkins Sr., MD.

4. Both spine surgeons have treated professional athletes, including Dwight Howard and Peyton Manning. Dr. Watkins Sr., developed the Trunk Stabilization Program, a structured back-and neck-strengthening program that provides rehabilitation for professional athletes while avoiding surgery. In April 2017, the surgeons created the "Back Doctor App" to give the public access to the program.

"By decreasing stress and tension in the muscles, followed by building strength to protect and off-load the spine, people can decrease spinal pain and avoid surgery," said Dr. Watkins Jr.
