Integra LifeSciences founder Dr. Richard Caruso dies

Richard Caruso, PhD, founder, former CEO and former chair of Integra lifeSciences, has died, the company said Aug. 16.

Dr. Causo founded Integra, a regenerative medicine company, in 1989. Integra was the first company to develop a tissue regeneration product, and it developed a product to  repair the protective covering of the brain after brain and spine surgery, according to an Integra news release.

He served as company chair from 1992 to 2011 and as CEO from 1992 to 1997.

"Dr. Richard Caruso made an impact on not only the medical technology industry, but more importantly, on the countless lives around the world who have benefited from the products and technologies that Integra LifeSciences has today," Stuart Essig, Integra LifeSciences' chair, said in the news release. "His vision, transformative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit have revolutionized the way surgeons treat their patients in the field of regenerative medicine."
